Submitted in teen ink and eber and wein- The Weight of a Hollow Smile

We learn so young to wear this face
A smile too bright, a laugh misplaced.
The mask was snug, a perfect fit,
But now it cracks, and we can’t quit.

The edges tear, the paint decays,
What once was perfect now betrays.
It itches, burns, it clings to skin,
I try to peel, but can’t begin.

Years go by, the fractures grow,
The mask too tight to ever go.
I tug and pull, I scream and shake
But still, it stays. It will not break.

It once was armor, now it’s a cage,
A prison lined with silent rage.
I sob, I beg, I choke and hide
But no one sees the tears inside.

They only see what they believe:
A smile they want, not what’s beneath.
And so I wear it every day
The hollow grin that won’t decay.

Later submission- A Shadow Left Behind

Time slips like sand through shattered glass,
Each grain a dream we couldn’t grasp.
A heart still beats in aching slow,
Beneath the weight of all we’ll never know.

The rain keeps falling, soft but cruel,
It drowns the spark, it floods the soul.
Regret returns in tidal waves,
Unwritten futures fill our graves.

Beauty fades in dim disguise,
Hope dissolves behind tired eyes.
Potential rots in quiet decay,
Lost in the gray of yesterday.

No name etched deep, no lasting sound—
Just fading footsteps on hollow ground.
Not even pain remains the same,
It, too, dissolves without a name.

We vanish gently in the rain.

Submit to teen ink- Fragments of a Heart Unheld

I loved you fully, heart and soul,
But you never felt it, never made me whole.
The ache was sharp, a constant throb,
A wound that never learned to stop.

I gave you pieces of who I am,
Hoping you’d see me, understand.
But you never saw the love I gave,
And slowly, I learned how to be brave.

I thank you for the memories, the light,
For teaching me how to say goodbye right.
The pain still lingers, a quiet crack,
A fracture that doesn’t come back.

It hurts sometimes, deep in my chest,
But now I breathe, I’ve learned to rest.
I’ve learned to ignore what still remains,
Like a scar that no longer brings pain.
